International Students Program

Provider: Department of Education and Training, Victoria
CRICOS provider number 00861K

Box Hill High School has been a provider of overseas as study since 1957, and has established many links with Asian countries. Our International Student Program has been one of the largest in Victoria since 1996. The school welcomes students in years 10-12 from a variety of countries and areas including China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia.

Mrs Annie Loke and Mr Darren Yap have coordinated this program since 1996. The main role is to ensure that each student feels supported and confident in Australia as well as monitoring each student's visa status, attendance and academic progress at Box Hill High School. Upon request, they will organise full board for students in a local family. We ensure that each student is comfortable in the new environment so that his or her stay at Box Hill High School is a happy one.

International students also feel supported by being able to converse easily with staff at the school in their own language. Mr Yap speaks several Asian languages and in addition, several members of our teaching and support staff are fluent in Mandarin, Malay, Vietnamese and several Chinese dialects. Student reports are translated and sent home by the school at least twice a year.

As a specific component of our International Student Program, specialist EAL (English as an Additional Language) teachers provide an Intensive English Program, which is thoroughly enjoyed by newly arrived students. Our Intensive English Program Coordinator and staff have designed the program to support the experience of international students when they move into mainstream classes. These Intensive English Programs help students improve their English speaking, writing and reading skills prior to entering mainstream classes for regular lessons. ESL teachers also work with teachers throughout the school to develop strategies which make learning in the regular classroom easier for our international students. International students are highly motivated. Many have achieved excellent results and are now studying in universities of their first choice.

When I first arrived at Box Hill High from Indonesia I was very nervous and rather scared. Everything was new to me: the school; the people; the language and many other things. After a short time though, I got used to things. Now I feel like I have been here for many years even though I only started at the beginning of the year. I have made more friends and I think I get along well with the teachers and students. They are all very helpful and friendly. I am very happy here.
